Heart Don’t Fail Me!

My first assignment as a first sergeant was on Johnson Atoll, a small strip of “rock” located about half way between the Marshall Islands and the Hawaiian Islands. It is about two and half miles long and about three-quarters of a mile wide. At the time, the Army had a unit of about three hundred personnel assigned there to safeguard and maintain a stockpile of toxic chemical munitions.

The day I arrived, the company commander was off-island and wouldn’t be back for a week or so. I learned that it was his custom to take the entire unit on an “island run” upon his return. Continue reading →

Weary From The Race

Life is a race.

Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me His own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.                                                                             ~ Philippians 3:12-14

In the Bible, life is compared to a race.

It has been said that life isn’t a sprint, but a marathon. I have never run a marathon, but I’ve exercised enough to know that when one takes on a marathon, he knows it isn’t going to be easy. Most of us are in this for the long haul.

So should we be surprised when it gets tough? We know it isn’t always going to be easy. Sometimes it will be downright difficult. Sometimes it stops us in our tracks and brings us to our knees. If we know this, why do we struggle so?

I would guess one reason is that we don’t like being uncomfortable. Yet, I know no one who would describe running a marathon as comfortable. Continue reading →
