Heart Don’t Fail Me!

My first assignment as a first sergeant was on Johnson Atoll, a small strip of “rock” located about half way between the Marshall Islands and the Hawaiian Islands. It is about two and half miles long and about three-quarters of a mile wide. At the time, the Army had a unit of about three hundred personnel assigned there to safeguard and maintain a stockpile of toxic chemical munitions.

Have you noticed how much misery there is in the world today? Everywhere one turns, there seems to be no end of wretchedness, despair, and unhappiness. People often ask me why God allows so much suffering in the world. It is an interesting question, to be sure, but it is one that I cannot adequately answer. I have found myself involved many times in this theological discussion without ever having resolved the issue to anyone’s satisfaction. Is This a Test?

In the last few weeks, there have been several financial needs that have all seemed to occur one right after the other. You know the expression, “When it rains, it pours.”

I can hear my Pastor’s voice in my head. He says that when he finds himself in this type of situation, he asks God,Is this a test?”

My best girlfriend tells me that when people ask her what I am like, her reply is, “She’s just like me, except that she’s an overachiever.” I was surprised when she told me this because I don’t see myself as an overachiever at all. Over the years I have seen how I can have those tendencies at times, but when it comes to the thought that God may be testing me, I can tell you I want to obtain major overachiever status on that one!
