Quotes to Live By…The Lessons Corrie Ten Boom Taught Us

May 31, 2014 by

Born on April 15, 1892, Cornelia “Corrie” ten Boom was a Dutch Christian, who along with her father and other family members, helped many Jews escape the Nazi Holocast during WWII. She was imprisoned for her acts of courage, self-sacrifice, and love. You can read her incredible story of hardships and forgiveness in her book, also made into a movie, The Hiding Place. Corrie passed away April 15, 1983, but she left behind a legacy. Here are some of my favorite quotes and the Scripture verses they bring to mind.

Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. ~Matthew 6:34

“If you look at the world, you’ll be distressed. If you look within, you’ll be depressed. If you look at God, you’ll be at rest.” The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” ~Exodus 33:14

“Hold everything in your hands lightly, otherwise it hurts when God pries your fingers open.”  let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. ~Hebrews 12:1

“Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.” For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. ~Matthew 6:14

“You can never learn that Christ is all you need, until Christ is all you have.” And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. ~Philippians 4:19

Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be made into a burden.” Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. ~Philippians 4:6

“There is no pit so deep, that God’s love is not deeper still.” ...may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ -Ephesians 3:18

“Don’t bother to give God instructions; just report for duty.”  For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. ~John 6:38

“Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?” Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. ~ Colossians 4:2

“Worry is a cycle of inefficient thoughts whirling around a center of fear.” …for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. ~2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV)

“Whenever we cannot love in the old, human way . . . God can give us the perfect way.” A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. ~John 13:34

“Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hatred. It is a power that breaks the chains of bitterness and the shackles of selfishness.” When a man’s ways are pleasing to the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. Proverbs 16:7 (NASB)

“…joy runs deeper than despair.” Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Psalm 30:5 (NKJV)

“Faith is like radar that sees through the fog – the reality of things at a distance that the human eye cannot see.” For we live by faith, not by sight. ~2 Corinthians 5:7

“When a train goes through a tunnel and it gets dark, you don’t throw away the ticket and jump off. You sit still and trust the engineer.” Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. ~Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)

“When He tells us to love our enemies He gives, along with the command, the love itself.” Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love. ~1 John 4:8

“A religion that is small enough for our understanding would not be big enough for our needs.” “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.“ As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” ~Isaiah 55:8-9

Wow. That post was like drinking out of a fire hose! What an amazing servant Corrie was. I am still back on the first one, “worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength.” So very true. Each one of these quotes deserves it’s own day. I need to go back and spend some time meditating on each one. The scriptural supports are spot on. Thank you Heather for putting Corrie’s cookies on the bottom shelf for all to enjoy.

That’s a very appropriate description! The first one is my favorite, as well. If we could really, truly believe that statement, I think it would change our entire outlook on our lives and our circumstances. This is my new challenge. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.
