Our God Reigns

Psalm 97

As I am sure you have experienced from time to time, life can be quite unpredictable. Actually, I am glad that it is. Why? Because, given our penchant for worrying over the least little things, we would be a basket case by the time the predicted event came to pass. It is enough to know that things will happen that I am not prepared for. Many come to me in the form of testing.

So, how do we cope? I am convinced that the psalmist had the right idea. Believers have only to look to God for the answers to life’s challenges. Hope in the life of the believer is not some warm and fuzzy feeling, but a reality from God.

Note first of all that we draw hope and confidence in our God because He reigns! That means that He is sovereign over everything. Nothing takes Him by surprise. (I am sure they are times when we think so!)

Second, it means that, because He is sovereign, righteousness (rightness in this sense) and justice are the essence of His reign. In other words, impartiality shall be meted out to the just and the unjust. Justice, in the second sense of the word, is negative; in the first sense, it is positive. How so? Because He has the power to see that justice is served, and will not fail to do so. Let’s be honest. Don’t we have a small place in our heart that wants to say, when people do us wrong: “He’s going to get his one of these days”?

God is the ruler over His “just” ones (vv. 10-11). He desires that we love Him and hate evil. As a consequence, He protects our lives; He rescues us from the wicked; He gives us light to see into darkness; and He gives us joy and peace.

For those reasons, let us “Rejoice in the LORD . . . and give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name.”

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~Romans 15.13 (NIV)

So many times I have asked myself where a cop was when someone cut me off or sped past me on a freeway. A seemingly minor infraction that we all are guilty of at some point if we are honest with our past. Minor that is until we see the consequences of a pile up on the evening news that took the life of so and so. Many times we seek justice for others, but want grace extended towards us. Jesus modeled a prayer for us asking his father to, “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” I am just so thankful that our God reigns, and not me, as I imperfectly try to live this out in my life with those around me. For if I was not a grace forgiven child of God, you would not want to be sitting next to me if I got what I truly deserved. Praise his holy name, for our God reigns!

“Many times we seek justice for others, but want grace extended towards us.” This is such a true statement, Rick. It is my prayer that we would, by the power of His Spirit, begin so see others as He does, offer the same grace He does, and to love them with His heart. Our God does, indeed, reign! Therefore, we have hope. Thank you, God!
