My Life Song – Live Like That

August 6, 2014 by

live-like-thatSometimes I am so laser focused on the to-do lists that I let the daily tasks of life dominate my thoughts and actions.

And then I listen to the song Live Like That by Sidewalk Prophets. The lyrics to that song inspire and encourage me in a way that causes me to zoom out and take a bird’s eye look at my life. From that view, I remember that I am a small part of something much greater.

Let’s consider the lyrics:

Sometimes I think

What will people say of me?

When I’m only just a memory

When I’m home where my soul belongs

Was I love when no one else would show up?

Was I Jesus to the least of us?

Was my worship more than just a song?

I want to live like that

And give it all I have

So that everything I say and do

Points to You

If love is who I am

Then this is where I’ll stand

Recklessly abandoned never holding back

I want to live like that

Am I proof that You are who You say You are?

That grace can really change a heart?

Do I live like Your love is true?

People pass

And even if they don’t know my name

Is there evidence that I’ve been changed?

When they see me do they see You?

I say that this is my life song because this is the person I want to aspire to be.

Sure, it’s a lofty goal and living a life in which everything I say and do points to Him is simply impossible in my own strength. That’s one of the reasons I like this song so much. Not only does it stretch me to the end of me, but it reminds me that it is Him who does the work to make me this person.

I live in the tension between a life of a mom that feels small and often insignificant and the truth that the God of the universe created me for a purpose. I need to be open to the work He is doing in me for His kingdom.

I needed the reminder today that sometimes we need to look up from the daily tasks and consider the bigger picture. Our life is but a vapor here.

My uncle took me to a movie once. The next morning as we were discussing it he said that it really made him think about the way he is living his life. That is what this song does for me.

I want to show the world the love you gave for me

I’m longing for the world to know the glory of the King

Heavenly Father, it is my heartfelt prayer that you would make this true of me, not just for the good of others, but for Your glory. Lord, give me the power to be love that others would see Jesus in me. Help me to remember that my life matters and that I have a purpose here. Help me to show Your love to the world that they would know the glory of the One True King. In the holy and precious name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” ~Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)

Absolutely a thought and heart provoking devotion this morning Heather. Thank you for living like that so we can be encouraged to do the same. It’s no accident that God set things up the way that he did. He longs for a deep relationship with us and also wants us to share the power and fruit of that relationship with others. There is so much responsibility in that line, “When they see me do they see you”… and the only way to get closer to that is in a daily surrender to a fully committed walk with our precious Lord and Savior. May all we say, think and do be for His honor and glory as we remember that we do have a purpose and that our lives do matter!

I can totally relate to this! Thanks for sharing! I too often become consumed with all that I have going on in my day, but I also like to remember that all that I am doing is for His purposes. Thanks for the reminder to live a focused life!

There is something comforting about knowing that we aren’t in this struggle alone, isn’t there? Thanks for reading, Leesha.

I love that song and the lyrics inspire me, too. Lately God has helped me realize that being small is right where I need to be and it’s only about small acts of love rather than worrying about all the big stuff. It’s really cool to see that He doesn’t care how many people notice us, only that we’re love t

Great post. I love these words especially – ‘Not only does it stretch me to the end of me, but it reminds me that it is Him who does the work to make me this person.’ – I think this is always something I hope to be continually reminded of whenever I encounter challenges or commands that seem too great for me to fulfil. It’s wonderful to feel excited by the reality that it is His grace that ultimately sustains us and allows us to live up to the lofty callings He’s given to us all.

I’m glad to be next to you at Leisha’s. I’ve never heard the song before but the lyrics are amazing. Your desire to leave a godly mark on those around you, on your children, is beautiful and God will honor it.

Wonderful post. It is so true, it is most easy to get caught up in our list of things to get done. But at the end of the day, I want to say I did what was on His list, not mine. We so need to be constantly reminded of this. Have a blessed Sunday!

Beautiful post! I love the words that you shared that the song “stretches me to the end of me”. I pray we all can be stretched in this way so our lives look, feel and reflect God. Blessed to be visiting you from The Weekend Brew today. Mary
