Light Up The Sky

As I stood in my kitchen the other night listening to this song, I fought back tears as I thanked God for the ways He has moved in my life.

Songs have an incredible way of bringing back memories don’t they? Though it has been a few years, I remember it like it was yesterday.

I can recall how my heart raced with fear as we heard the news. How we simultaneously cancelled plans and packed the car while trying to have faith and trust God.

It was a time of questions and uncertainties, a time of driving back and forth to the hospital and of probing doctors for answers to our questions.

It was a time of listening to a song over and over again, our hearts crying out to God as we longed to feel His presence.

We had no idea of what the future held for our family, but we knew God’s light would shine in the midst of our difficult circumstances. Our voices carried up to Him with faith that His very presence does, indeed, light up the sky.

The Afters put it this way:

When I’m feeling all alone
With so far to go
The signs are nowhere on this road
Guiding me home

When the night is closing in
It’s falling on my skin
Oh God, will You come close?

You light, light, light up the sky
You light up the sky to show
You are with me

And I, I, I can’t deny
No, I can’t deny that You are right here with me
You’ve opened my eyes
So I can see You all around me

While we had to face uncertainties, we could not deny the reality that the Light of the World had our family in His hands. There was no way we could know the future, but as they say, we could be certain of Who held our future in His hands.

So, we sang, with tears and with fears. We cried out for Him to come close while knowing He was already there.

When stars are hiding in the clouds
I don’t feel them shining
When I can’t see beyond my doubt
The silver lining

When I’ve almost reached the end
Like a flood You’re rushing in
Your Love is rushing in

So I run straight to Your arms
You’re the bright and morning Sun
To show Your love
There’s nothing You won’t do

You light, light, light up the sky
You light up the sky
To show me You are with me

And I, I, I can’t deny
No, I can’t deny that You are right here with me
You’ve opened my eyes
So I can see You all around me

While I can’t listen to this song without remembering this challenging time in our lives, I will be eternally thankful that during those dark days, we could focus on the Light that guides our lives and trust in His goodness.

Let me encourage you today that just because you feel alone in the darkness, it doesn’t make that true.

“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” ~1 John 1:5 (NKJV)

No matter what I am going through, I cannot listen to this song and not be comforted by the peace of His presence. I hope that it does the same for you.

I was so comforted by having my praying kids around me! I was praying during the nights seeking a word from the LORD about my future. We had plans to build a company and a life up in this Great Northwest. What word can you give me LORD; what word? As I sought a word and listened (Believe me, the LORD had my undivided attention!) I heard my sweet, gentle FATHER in HEAVEN speak two words; Restoration and Jubilee. Well, my sweet husband went from not knowing family to as normal a husband can be. Lowell has been restored. He has a few issues from the strokes but they are reminders of GOD’s AMAZING GRACE and PROVISION. The LORD is our ROCK and our SALVATION in HIM will I trust!!

    Beautiful and encouraging my friend.

I’ve had very dark times but God’s presence floods me when in praise and worship or when reading scripture. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read the same passage hundreds of times and then, all of a sudden, on one day that I need it most, that scripture explodes from the pages and fills my heart and spirit.

    Thank you for sharing.
    xoxo

Isn’t it incredible when that happens, Jennifer? That’s why the Bible is living and breathing. I love it when the Holy Spirit does that for us. Thank you for sharing that with us, my friend. Blessings to you and yours.

What a great example Heather of how God’s message of encouragement and hope can be easily heard and recalled through Christian music. I often times will hum a tune that comes to me and add the words… instant worship service! Interestingly, the song you chose in this time of need came from a group who had almost given up the music business after losing their beloved friend and manager. Then after 2 members left, they tried to regroup and their new drummers best friend died. Through their adversity was birthed this beautiful song that was there for you and your family in your time of need. Praise God!

What a beautiful God-honoring post. God has given me a SONG for those times in my life, over and over again. I remember well the day my diabetic hubby was having major surgery…I woke up singing a children’s song “Our God is a Great Big God…and He Holds us in His Hands”. I sung/hummed that song ALL.DAY.LONG and couldn’t have stopped if I had tried. I love it when God puts a song in our hearts during those dark days as a reminder to show us just how close HE is to us when we need Him most. Thanks for blessing me again today. XO

Yes, this happens to me often. It really is impossible to stay down too long when we are singing praises to our King, isn’t it? I was just thinking of you and wondering how things are going for you. Are you settled in?

This is beautiful! For me i find that different things bring comfort in times of darkness for me – praise and worship, being around family and friends, being alone and having time in my word; it just all depends.
