When I cry out to You,
Then my enemies will turn back;
This I know, because God is for me.
~Psalm 56:9 (NKJV)
I may have told you about my friend George once before. He’s a pretty big man. The kind I would describe as one who could go bear hunting with a switch and give the switch to the bear! But, George has a friend he calls “Big Larry.” I once met Big Larry and, sure enough, he was huge. George always said that when he and Big Larry were together, no one messed with him (George).
This is the thought that came to mind when I read this Scripture. Though it is difficult to adequately express the implications of such a statement, it should bring us joy and comfort to have such knowledge. God is for us in the worst sinfulness of our existence; He is for us when we are His enemies; He is for us in the struggles of our life; He is for us when we are too busy to acknowledge Him with our time and praise; He is for us in the dangers we encounter; He is for us when we are sorely tempted; and He is for us when our voices go up to Him in prayer.
The psalmist was not the only one to allow that God is “for us.” Paul makes such a bold statement in Romans 8. He went beyond the bounds of just saying that God is for us, he audaciously stated that, “If God is for us, who can be against us?” Further, “who can bring a charge against [us]” and “. . . who can [rightly] condemn us . . .”
How can we have such confidence that God is “for us”? Paul sheds light on that question in Romans 8:32. And then there is this: “Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us” (v. 34). With this assurance, you and I are able to courageously walk with the belief that, since He is “for us,” we have nothing to fear. In a sense, “Big Larry” is always there!”
Blessings in abundance for you today.
